Rev. Cook's faith journey emphasizes ecumenism and an open and affirming attitude. Her mother was a church secretary, so she grew up helping in the Presbyterian Church where her mother worked. As she and her husband moved, they searched for communities of faith that fed their spiritual and familial needs, and, in 1983, they joined a Disciples of Christ Church in Bethany, WV. The ecumenism of the Disciples, the emphasis on believers' education and baptism, the weekly communion, and the open attitude of the denomination appealed to both of them. As Carol worked in the church as an elder and teacher, she began to feel God's call to learn more and to do more for the church than her fulltime career as a French teacher allowed. While helping an interim minister with a baptism class, she realized that she felt a strong call to become a minister. Once she decided in the summer of 2003 to begin her studies, she experienced a confidence and resonance in that path that continued to affirm her decision. Their move to Baltimore in 2006 and her work at the Ecumenical Institute for her seminary degree were a part of that affirmation. The call to serve at First Christian is the exciting next phase of Carol's service for God.

We're excited about the new look of the pastor's study, which was redesigned in February 2011 by church member and architect Kevin Skyat. Thanks for your service to the church, Kevin!
